Creating light-bulb moments
More than 1.3 million children participate in Modern Woodmen youth educational programs each year, gaining light-bulb moments of understanding through hands-on activities. Our representatives donate these free programs to schools, home-schools and youth groups nationwide. Each program includes flexible instructions, activities and reproducibles on topics relevant to today’s children, ages 3-14.
Ecology Awareness Program
Designed to help kids understand the part people play in the environment, this program can help students make informed choices. Through eight activities, primary students examine the ecosystem of their school grounds. Interactive lessons help older students better understand and appreciate ecosystems.
Exercise and Nutrition Program
This program provides information to help kids make healthy choices. Activity ideas provided include a puppet show for preschoolers, a life-size board game for primary students and a virtual hike of the Appalachian Trail for middle schoolers. Lessons tie to math, language arts and other subject areas.
Financial Literacy Program
This personal finance program helps students prepare for future financial responsibilities. Hands-on exercises introduce key financial concepts like compound interest, loans and insurance. Practice exercises help them learn to make wise financial decisions and create saving, sharing and spending plans.
Patriotic Civics Program
Combining lessons in civics and American history with original music, games and activities, this program gets students’ attention. Activities cover our role and rights as citizens, state trivia, weird laws and much more. Suggested discussion topics range by age and include the formation of our nation, the structure of our government, our economy, and the power of information and civic engagement.
School Speech Contest
Available to schools of all kinds, this program provides valuable public speaking experience. Students in grades five through eight are eligible to compete at the local level and advance to further levels of competition. Modern Woodmen provides all materials needed to run this contest, including topic and judging guidelines and materials, participation awards at all levels, and monetary awards at the national level. Contests run from Jan. 1 to May 31 of each year.
